He grips my arm at the elbow and escorts me inside. As we walk up three flights of stairs, his hold never loosens. When we reach the top level, he taps in a code on the wall-mounted keypad, and we step through one set of wide double doors. We walk through two more sets of double doors and come out into a long narrow corridor with windows on one side and a row of separate steel cells on the other.
He unlocks one of the empty cells and guides me inside. I sit down on the end of the cold, hard bench and try to calm the rampant pounding in my chest. I wonder what they have in store for me next. There’s a metallic clunking sound as the door locks, and then I hear the heavy thread of his footsteps as he walks away.
“Hey, doll,” a deep voice says behind me. Every hair on my body rises to attention, and I refuse to turn around. “I don’t bite,” the voice adds, amusement coloring his tone. Running my hands through my hair, I tap my foot nervously on the ground. “That’s a Clementia uniform, right?”
That got my attention.
Twisting around, I look down the row of cells, and my eyes lock on the only other occupant, a guy who looks to be a little bit older than me, residing in the cell three down from mine. Hot Boy Alert! His golden locks tumble in loose waves over his forehead, and his expressive lips are curved in a telltale smirk. Rising suddenly, he stretches his arms out over his head and yawns. He’s tall and well built, with wide shoulders, a taut chest, and muscular arms. Smirking even wider, he folds his arms over his chest, as he stares at me through navy blue eyes. “I’m Jax.”
“I’m …” I start to say.
“I know who you are. Ariana Skyee, unless I’m mistaken.”
“How did you …” I stop mid-sentence when I remember that I’m a wanted, convicted criminal. “Never mind,” I mutter.
“How did you end up here?” he asks, cocking his head to the side.
“I volunteered.” I snort, though it’s hardly funny.
“Are you some special brand of insane?”
Heckles raised, I shoot him my deadliest look. “What?”
“I know Clementia isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, but you’ve got to be cray-cray to hand yourself over to the authorities.”
I stand up and lean forward against the steel bars. “How do you know of Clementia?”
“Spent a bit of time with them; definitely not one of my better decisions.” He scrubs a hand over his jaw, while staring at me intently.
I don’t know if he’s messing with me or not, but I’m intrigued to hear more. “Why? What happened?”
“Let me ask you a question. Do you trust them?”
I don’t hesitate in my reply. “Not particularly.”
“Smart,” he says, gripping the cell bars. “There’s a lot of weird stuff going on in that compound.”
Icy tremors rip up and down my spine. “What kind of weird stuff?”
“No offense, doll, but that’s not something I’m willing to share. I’d prefer to live a long and happy life if it’s all the same to you.”
“You can’t just throw out vague allegations and then say nothing else!”
“See, that’s the good thing about being a fugitive like me. I can do what the hell I like, and I’m not answerable to anyone.” Stepping away from the bars, he stands with his legs stretched out wide. His stance matches his grin.
“Sure looks like that’s working out well for you,” I say, piercing him with a scornful look.
“All part of my plan, doll.” He smirks again.
“Stop calling me that. It’s irritating.” He laughs, a deep full-bellied laugh, and I scowl. “Whatever.” Sitting back down on the bench, I turn my back to him.
“Come on, doll-face, don’t you want to be friends?” he snickers. Ew, sleazy. I’m seriously wondering what they’re putting in the water around these parts. Between him and the weird old couple in the truck, this has been the strangest few hours of my life.
